The New Facilities for the Recording and Storage of the Video in the DVD Format
By Nicolay Azin

The recording of the video images in the DVD format provides the acceptable quality for the majority of the contemporary tasks of the video production, storage and distribution of the information. The DVD format is widely spread and represents the good alternative to the videocassettes. Its wide spread it the area of the video storage was prevented by the high cost of the equipment for the DVD recording, the undecided questions in the field of the author's rights and non-coordination of the typed of the DVD recording formats.

Till the latest time on the market didn't appear any new facilities for the video recording on the DVD mediums. There existed only one well-spread facility DVD-RW of the Pioneer Company at about $5000. Now there appeared the computer recording facilities and the stationary like the videocassette recorders at the lower price. There appeared the first cameras with the recording on the DVD mediums Hitachi DZ-MV100a, Panasonic VDR-M10. The facilities for the recording on the DVD mediums of both standards (PC and Mac) are produced and also DVD-RW (Pioneer DV-A03) and DVD+RW (HP and RICOH). In these two standards are produced also the stationary facilities for the sound recording DVD Panasonic DMR-E20 (DVD-RW), Pioneer DVR-100 and Philips DVD-R1500 (DVD+RW). At the cost of the single recording discs (DVD-R) and the repeatedly recording (DVD-RW) of about $10 and an opportunity of the video recording with the quality close to the Betacam SP 2 hour long the recording in the DVD format might be appropriate for the video program archiving.

The DVD Videocassette Recorder Philips DVD-R1000 (DVD-R1500)

The recording is carried out only on the discs of the DVD-RW standard and in that case the facility is capable to reproduce the discs of the Video-CD, Audio-CD, etc formats. The discs might be viewed on the majority of types of the DVD players. One of the advantages of the facility is the presence of the component entrances and exits. There are also the analogous entrances and exits (composite and S-Video) and the IEEE 1394 interface. The recording to the disc might be processed with the variable compression rate. Its prolongation fluctuates from 1h in the HQ routine (9.72 Mbit/sec) to 4h in the HQ routine (2.54 Mbit/sec). According to the Philips declaration the SP routine (2 h on the disc of the 4.7 GB capacity) corresponds to the quality of 500 tvl what is equal to the recording in the DV/DVCAM/DVCPRO format. The model DVD-R1500 varies from the DVD-R100 in the presence of the distance control station Pronto Pro with the colorful screen that reacts to the touchment.

The DVD videocassette recorders Panasonic DMR-E20

The recording is realized only on the re-recording discs DVD-RAM or on the single recording discs DVD-R. The DVD-RAM discs can be reproduced on the DMR-E20 itself and on some other DVD players of the Panasonic Company, the DVD-R discs can be viewed on the majority of types of the DVD players. One re-recording DVD-RAM disc allows recording up to 9.4 GB of video and sound. This is equaled to the 2 h of video of the broadcast quality or to the 4 h of the video of better quality than the S-VHS. Erase or re-record such a disc can be up to 100 thousand times and the DMR-E20 allows viewing and recording of the video at the same time. That means that there is an opportunity to look through the material that that was recorded an hour ago and to record what is running now. The ring of the control Time Slip that is situated on the front board provides an opportunity to choose the needed parts of the record for fast and exact.

Successor of VTR DMR-E20 - DMR-T2020

For the achieving of the optimal quality DMR-E20 is processed the entering video with the help of the Hybrid VBR function (variable flow of data). This technology tests the entering signal and automatically chooses the 'speed' of recording (the amount of units at the shot) for the achieving of the optimal correlation between the quality of recording and its duration.

The videocassette recorders also produce the temporary correction and filtering (pectinate filter) of the entering signal for the increasing in the recording's quality. At the reproduction three different digital filters decrease the noise and increase the color rendition and clearness of the image.

The main functions are:

  • the reproduction of the DVD video discs and the CD, CD-R, and CD-RW audio discs;
  • the recording on the DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs;
  • the algorithm of the recording with the variable flow (Hybrid VBR);
  • the fast arbitrary access;
  • the digital squelches;
  • the build-in tuner (PAL);
  • the sound recording in the Dolby Digital 2.0 format;
  • the mirror exit for the Dolby Digital;
  • the composite, S-Video, entrance DV (i-link) entrances/exits;
  • the remote control station.

The testing of the Panasonic DMR-E20 videocassette recorder was made on the TV-6 channel, at the "TWIN" Company (the video production distributor) and at the NTV Company. According to the experts of these companies opinion the quality of the Panasonic DMR-E20 recording is quite equal to the Betacam SP quality. Sometimes the 'flaws' are noticeable only on the changes between some saturated with colors and at the fast change of the images in the shot and at the recording routine below the standard the speed of recording LP (4h on a disc) and EP (8 h on a disc).

At the recording on the discs of single recording after the procedure of the shutting of the disc it is easily reproduced on the domestic Sony and Pioneer players of the lowest price category.
