The Systems of ASM Archiving on the Base of DVD, MO, CD, CD-R, CD-RW
By Andrey Stepanov

The German Company ASM, established in 1993 initially specialized in the creation of the finished archive complexes based on the optic technologies. The purpose oriented developments of storage systems of large data volumes (from 500 GB) allowed to the company creating the whole series of systems from the modest of 100 discs to the large corporative systems on the 1700 and more DVD-RAM of the 9.4 GB volume. All of the ASM systems are accomplished with the medium CD/DVD/MO/WO drives and SCSI2 interface and company robotic systems of access to the data. The integration with additional facilities such as hard discs, additional drives with LVD, fiber optic interface, the information reader from the bar code is possible.

In comparison with the analogous decisions of the other companies, the systems of the ASM company differentiate by the simple scalability and portability of data without the loss of information, and the short time of the system reproduction that achieves by the use of the bar code technology for the users identification. That allows accelerating the access to the data and minimally reduce the time of system recovery after the transient error (power fail, etc). According to the producer's declaration the average time of the recovery after the fail is 30 minutes. Also the systems favorably differentiate by the use of only standard equipment without any modifications.

One more application of the system is the copying of CD/DVD.

The capability of the system to operate with 48 drives and 1600 discs allows automating the process of the disc doubling and minimizing the time of such an operation. For the protection of the disc array against damage and unauthorized access the system are build on the base of waterproof 19" cupboards. The use of the fault-tolerance mechanisms allows to the ASM Company systems operating for over 7 year steadily.

All the archiving systems have the network interface and can be controlled from the Windows NT or UNIX servers. Except from the own software provided by the company with the ZETA systems, for the control of the array there might be used any compatible software, for example, the program complex CD/DVD Axxess of the Qstar Technologies that allows operating with the array as with one information medium with the help of almost any operation system and on the any network protocol. Such a 'merge' of the stackers array into one big virtual array allows making the access, processing and administration of the data much easier.

Among the clients of the ASM Company there are such as Alcatel, BMW, RWE, Berliner bank. Besides the ASM equipment is used in the national libraries of France and Korea, The European Observatory, The Parliament of Slovenia and lots of other organizations. The ASM systems are the good decision for the storage of the large data arrays, organization of electronic libraries and video archives for the 'video on call' systems.
