Video projectors for E-Cinema from JVC Company

Review contents:

The E-Cinema is the process of digital production, distribution and display of films. A synonym is digital cinematography.

Video projectors for an electronic (digital) cinematography may be used in two cases: in the process of production and at display of materials. In the second case is more correct to use the term the digital cinema projector to separate these enough specialized projectors from the huge market of multimedia projectors (or video projectors). And as against the market of multimedia projectors on which more than fifty manufacturers are in reality (in the Russian Internet there is the information on projectors more than 60 models, but we assess the more modest estimation). At the market of projectors for a digital cinematography traditionally work four companies such as JVC, Barco, Christie and Digital Projection. It is necessary to note, that in the last two years on this market such players as Kodak, NEC, Panasonic, Sanyo and Sony are appeared, that is pointed to the growing interest for digital cinematography.

Already a lot of years the JVC Company is on the market of a digital cinematography. In 1998 JVC has introduced the production of high-end projectors on the basis of its own technology D-ILA (Digital Image Light Amplifier), thus having made a jump in sphere of the projection equipment. Already the first JVC projectors were provided by record resolution to that time which was 1365×1024 samples.

Projectors JVC are distinguished by high resolution, natural color reproduction, correct display of grey gradations, absence of visible pixelization, that allows them successfully apply with in digital cinematography.

Let’s stop more detail on application of JVC projectors at the production and distribution phase.

During the production of digital cinema materials the projectors are used as viewing devices. As initially the material prepares for display on large screen the adequate control of its quality on the sizable screen is necessary. The reasons are more than one. The first is high resolution. The matter is that under resolution 1920×1080 and more it is problematic to reveal any flaws in the size of some pixels on the general monitor. For example, if on 20" monitor a defect occupies only some points and may be imperceptible, then on the screen by 2 m width and more it will be already enough large blemish, well visible to the naked eye. The second reason is the physiological features of perception of the image on the large screen. The image jerks, gating, blurring, defocusing are became more visible, and the color perception is changed.

That the projector could be used as a control display of video materials, it should met the following criteria (in the priority order): natural color reproduction, natural display of grey tones (gamma), high resolution. Besides it should not cause the eyes exhaustion, to provide by high reliability, opportunity of work in the round-the-clock mode, high contrast ratio. These criteria are met by all modern JVC projectors. In practice in viewing rooms the models DLA-SX21, DLA-G150CL, DLA-QX1G are applied.

By the words of Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of such films as “Armageddon”, “Rock”, “To steal in 60 seconds”, “Pirates of the Caribbean sea” etc. about the projectors D-ILA application in viewing rooms: “When I look at the combination ‘D-ILA-projector and D-VHS VTR’, the purity and colors on the image are practically the same, as from original film (such as of master-copy) and it is better than that I frequently see at cinemas. I am very glad, that I have the JVC system at my working place and at home”.

If during production phase the digital projectors only catch up a film then at a display stage the picture quality from a digital film projector is already higher than that is achieved at demonstration from typical projectors in current cinemas. The studies carried out at the best American film cinemas have shown that real resolution of the image is no more than 750 TV lines. JVC projectors provide the resolution more than 1000 TV lines. Besides at display from a digital projector there are no scratches, dust spots, jitter, which are the indispensable attributes of the cinema film.

The JVC Company produces the projectors for a wide spectrum of cinema halls: capacity from 10 spectators (so-called VIP-halls) with the screen size from 3 m up to the large 800-seat halls with screen width up to 15 m. D-ILA technology of JVC company is well approached for digital cinemas. Its distinctive features are the following: smooth, “silky” image, absence of visible pixelization, wide color gamut, high contrast ratio, extreme reliability — more than 100 thousand hours without chip degradation.

The basic features of JVC D-ILA projectors and area of their application in a digital cinematography are given below.

DLA-SX21

DLA-SX21

Scope of this portable projector by weight 5.9 kg only is the viewing rooms, small and middle-sized halls of digital cinemas with the screen width up to 7 m that is confirmed by numerous demonstrations for experts and installations. DLA-SX21 provides the high quality image projection with resolution 4.5 billion pixels and with natural color reproduction. The projector is completed with a color management system and digital input DVI-D (the plug and play standard). In projector DLA-SX21 JVC for the first time the technology of image processing DIST (Digital Image Scaling Technology) is applied. For development of technology DIST the JVC Company was awarded by EISA award in nomination “The best video innovation of 2002…2003 years”. At the end of the last year VIP-presentation “The Digital Cinema: Here and Now!”, organized by the “ROSAR multimedia”, “Era”, JVC, D DATA Companies, the effective decisions to organize the completed chain of a digital cinematography, from content creation to its display, were offered and showed. Displays were carried out from projectors DLA-SX21 (the screen width 7 m) and DLA-QX1 (the screen width 9 m) in 220 seat hall. It was noted the highest quality of the projection equipment: the naturalness of the color reproduction was marked, the ability to transfer even the finest specialities, color and light decisions with the large accuracy, — which has even more precisely emphasized the magnificent work of operators and directors. One of last demonstrations of opportunities of this projector for small halls of electronic cinemas was the conference of the “Era” Company in Krasnoyarsk on base KTK “Afontovo” at the end of May of this year. The high picture quality was appreciated by all conference participants.

DLA-G150CL

DLA-G150CL CineLine series projector

By development of this projector the main vector of applications of forces for JVC company was the picture quality, therefore it is no wonder, that DLA-G150CL has the broadest application in viewing rooms for quality control of the image. Supply of xenon lamp provides more natural, not changeable with time, the bright and realistic colors as the xenon lamp spectrum is the closest to natural light. Besides it provides the conformity of DLA-G150CL to professional color structure D65. According to the certificate the contrast ratio of the projector is 600:1, and real value is more than 730:1. In this projector the seven-step system of brightness control of the image which forms a luminous flux within the limits of 70…100% from full power consumption of the lamp is used. Due to the control system of luminous flux the resource of xenon lamp is increased up to 2 thousand hours under economic mode of exploitation. At the same time the luminous flux remains permanent during all service life of the lamp and is equal to 1000 ANSI-lm.

DLA-M2000SC

DLA-M2000SC projector

DLA-M2000SC is the stationary projector for use in small and middle-sized halls of digital cinemas with the screen width up to 8 meters. In the projector the xenon lamp that provides an exact color reproduction without any complex circuit of the color control system is used. Use of four replaceable lenses (optionally) provides the wide flexibility in installation. When the lenses with shift function are applied, it is possibility of double installation of projectors that provides an overall luminous flux up to 4000 ANSI-lm.

DLA-M5000SC

DLA-M5000SC stationary projector

DLA-M5000SC is the stationary projector for use in middle-sized and big halls of digital cinemas with the screen width up to 12 m. As in traditional film-film projectors into the projector the powerful xenon lamp is used. For more exact display of grey gradations the DLA-M5000SC supplies the 10-bit Digital Gamma Correction, which is capable the exact display of even the smallest tone differences. In combination with xenon lamp it results to projection of the even more natural image. The DLA-M5000SC is provided by 8-step system of the brightness control. So, it is possible to adjust an optimum luminous flux for the certain conditions, for example, for more comfortable perception in a small hall with small screen it is possibility to decrease the projector luminance.

DLA-QX1G

Projector for large halls DLA-QX1G

DLA-QX1G is the powerful projector for use in the large halls of digital cinemas with the screen width up to 15 meters. Also this projector supplies in viewing rooms where the most rigid requirements to picture quality are in effect. Real resolution of the projector is 2048×1536 (QXGA) what allows without compression to display the HD picture (1920×1080). In this case the projection of the image on the 15-m screen results in the pixel size equal to 7 mm only. As result, it is smooth “cinema” image.

The first demonstration of opportunities of this projector in Russia has been carried out in 2002 during the international conference “E-Cinema. Production and distribution” on the 15-m screen in the 1000-seat conference hall of the “Cosmos” hotel, and specialists have highly estimated its opportunities. This conference was organized by GUP NIKFI, “Era” Company and “TKT” magazine. Work of this and other projectors from JVC Company was many times shown at profile exhibitions and conferences in Russia and the CIS countries on the stand of “Era” Company.

DLA HD-2K

Half-year back the JVC Company has presented a new digital projector of high resolution of D-ILA family as a unit with the video processor developed in cooperation with Farouja Company (division of Genesis Microchip). The new projector allows to reproduce high-quality images with resolution 1920×1280 for the presentations, special viewing rooms, locations for corporate business-seminars and meetings, medical institutions and museums, cinemas with halls of the small and middle sizes.

DLA HD-2K projector

Resolution of DLA HD-2K fully complies with HD standard. The chip 0.8" JVC D-ILA is created on the basis of technology LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) which allows to increase the density of pixels up to the level excelling DLP and LCD technologies. To achieve the similar picture quality still rather recently, the large size chips which were located in bulky and expensive projectors were required. The doubtless advantage of the DLA HD-2K projector is that it the smallest and brightest projector in sector of real HD.

Three separate chips in DLA HD-2K eliminate the necessity in color wheel, therefore at the image received from this projector, completely there is no effect of rainbow (instead of monophonic color the person sees various color flashes). Each D-ILA-pixel is located on motionless smooth surface behind of layer of liquid crystals, as allows to reduce a distance between pixels, thus eliminating the screen effect inherent to other projection technologies. Full absence of these effects guarantees to the spectator the easy viewing of D-ILA-images without the sight pressure.

The digital video processor which has designed together with Farouja — the company known in the world as the founder of powerful technologies for processing of video images,- is operated with the wide spectrum of input video signals, including 480i/480p/720p/1080i. For this purpose the analog inputs — component, RGB, composite, S-Video, or the digital inputs — DVI with HDCP (High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) support are stipulated. The device transforms various standards of analog or digital DVI-video to the digital signal of high resolution which is sending on the projector through DVI-D connector.

The projector sizes are 298×134×360 mm, and the weight — about 5.9 kg. The projector and the video processor are connected by the digital cable (DVI-D), capable to transfer the 1080/60p signal lost-free. Both devices may locate on the distance up to 50 m from each other.

DLA HD2K reproduces the images in the natural, deeply saturated color palette with resolution 1920×1080, that is comparable by quality to the images projected from the film. One more highlight of the projector is its contrast ratio (2000:1), that again practically corresponds to the depth of the film black color, with smooth gradation and low noise, especially in the shaded sites. The own optical mechanism was specially developed for DLA HD2K to reproduce images with a standard illumination level for cinemas on screens with 16:9 aspect ratio.
