Whiplash2 video repliy system from Leitch Whiplash2 is a system which guarantees an output signal of broadcast quality and it may be used by TV and cable companies as a high-efficiency digital videorecorder with function of delay and acceleration of the picture presentation. Whiplash2 is the second generation of the systems which are intended for recording and fast playback of video signal and the audio information. The first version of the Whiplash system was appeared on the market from DPS Company from the end of 1990th years. After buying of the DPS company by company Leitch, the second improved version Whiplash2 has appeared. It has defined the further development and improvement of the system. It is intended for recording and the reply realization during TV translations of sport events. System Whiplash2 has incorporated the best computer technologies and is constructed on the basis of the video processing board dpsReality. It is two-stream board of input/output of video and audio signals. It may work as with compressed (MJPEG), and with non-compressed video. But system Whiplash offers to the user to work only with compressed signal (up to 1.3:1). The basic is the fact, that with the design architecture it provides the simultaneous recording and playback of video signal, replacing bulky and less functional VTR, allowing providing the instant access to any digitized videofile or stilling picture. The whole translation is recorded without any pause, allowing on demand of the director to repeat any scene. The scene is reproduced in forward or inverse direction with any speed equal to 1…200% from rating value. Smooth display of replies without “jerks” is guaranteed by the integrated processor of three-dimensional digital effects DPS V3DX, which is guaranteed the irreproachable interpolation of videoscene with duration changing. Whiplash2 operationThe system is executed as standard 19" unit by height of 2U, by depth about 50 cm and by weight about 18 kg. It allows to install it in any mobile complex or OBV. The double power supply unit guarantees the failure-safe work during all session of recording. At integration of Whiplash2 system in an existing complex the switching of the unit through video and audio inputs is provided by special interface cable. The standard complete set of system enables to work with analog signals on inputs and outputs such as composite PAL, component, S-Video, and also symmetric and asymmetrical on audio. If it is supposed to use a digital signal, for example, removing it from SDI-output of a camera channel unit the cable may be connected directly to a video card through a BNC-connector, not creating any superfluous inconveniences and not occupying any additional space behind of the unit. Nevertheless, the analog interfaces may be separated through additional distributive boxes BreakOutBox which are fasten, for example, in the same rack, but thus occupying some additional space.
The unit provides one channel of recording and one channel of playback. It can work as in an individual mode (1 input and 1 output), and to be included in a group, which, in turn, may be unified with one or several other groups. It may be necessary in multichannel camera system under translation of large sport or other mass events. The number of units inside each group may be five (10 parallel video channels: 5 on recording and 5 on playback), and they work either in the Master or Slave mode. Master system Whiplash2 may operate on a network by four systems which are in Slave mode, each of which is capable to operate on RS-422 interface by five editing recorders, either tape or digital. At integration of several groups of the Whiplash2 systems by means of a local network it is possible to use clips from other group of cameras (units), thus the required scene may be directed, for example, from the slave machine through conducting master machine to a required network (group). Two versions of panels are accessible to Whiplash2, one of which, the JL Cooper SLO-MCS3000, has Jog/Shuttle and T-bar handles. It provides convenient work of the operator with system of replies Whiplash2. Being connected to the mainframe, the panel provides the control of all slave devices of this group. The general principle of connection and work of group of the Whiplash2 systems in a network is shown on the block diagram. Video signal which is transmitted on an input of each unit, will be digitized and recorded into the array included three hard disks. The general useful capacity of such unit is equal to 3×36 or 3×73 GB and is composed by a program method on the basis of general splitting RAID (stripe RAID 0) on the OS Windows 2000 platform. The user interface of system Whiplash2 is divided into three parts (windows), each of which defines the various stages and functions of work of the operator on air. System Whiplash2 may be started and to work both in a mode of recording in a loop, and in mode of the store of video clips. The basic mode — record in a loop — assumes playback of replies during continuous recording of the signal transmitting on input. In the upper part of the graphic interface (window of recording and playback) the signal transmitting on an input, together with its time-code is reproduced, i.e signal which is reproduced, that is reply (goes from an output) with its time-code. And on the right side the system display with the basic buttons of control and adjustments is located. Any, from the point of view of the operator, reply of the interesting scene may be marked and kept for the further reply. Marks may be made for any of five devices which are included in network group of the Whiplash2 systems. The middle part of the interface (bank of clips and play lists) is responsible for control and work with lists of replies (compositing, editing), accumulation of scenes, and also for control by whole disk subsystem of unit of Whiplash2 and by conducted units connected to it. Here the information about number and duration of the clip, its name and about any actions made is received and kept. At last, in the bottom part of the user interface the virtual control panel with Jog/Shuttle, T-bar, control buttons and buttons of call of preliminary settings for playback speed of replies, equal to 25, 33, 50 and 66% from rate value is shown. The typical working interface is shown in figure. The basic updates of the systems of slow motion and reply on the base of Whiplash2 are presented in the following table.
Whiplash2 system from Leitch company offers to video directors an extremely flexible mechanism of system updating at increase of number of input camera channels alongside with an opportunity of use of expanded control panel SlowMo, connections of general tape recorders that allows quickly and qualitatively to solve any tasks on the organization of TV translations and to integrate the unit of replies in the current TV complex. The system disadvantages are the following: incompletely friendly interface of control, and the fact of sharp increase of the system size at use of 4 input channels (8U) already and high price for one channel in comparison with products of competitors.
