Portable teleprompter ART-5 for studio and field shooting At present a teleprompter is an integral part of the any television studio equipment. Teleprompter is broadly used on TV at interview shooting, news topics and in production of the promotional trailers, TV film and etc. Due to a teleprompter the announcer, the presenter of TV program, the studio guest or actor may be verified with text, look right in the lens of the television camera that creates the effect of the direct contact with spectator. The text is displayed in teleprompter on special semi-translucent mirror, located before camera lens, through which the shooting is produced. Teleprompter ART-5 of the ART-prize company from Voronezh is specially designed for use by operative shooting group in field conditions. Teleprompter ART-5 is provided by small size and in weight, simplicity of the mounting and possibility of the use for the shooting out-of-studio. For teleprompter as source of information any stationary computer can be used, portable notebook or autonomous device M-1 for scrolling of the text. Depending on the shooting conditions the ART-5 allows to change the parameters of the readable text operatively by quick change of the projection device glass. The main technical features of teleprompter ART-5 are the following:
Due to compactness and small weight of system there is a possibility of its use at shooting without tripod that is to say from shoulder, but it is possible to install it on tele- or cinema camera when work with device of the Steadicam type. This teleprompter can be also used under bright external illumination.
Assembly of teleprompter is carried out manually without any instrument. As a whole the adjustment of the system ‘camera — teleprompter — announcer’ is in adjusting of the color balance, focus and necessary diaphragm of the video camera, as well as of selection of necessary scene features in monitor. The projection device is portable and easy removable. It is fixed directly on the TV camera lens and has a strong and light aluminum construction. The operative glass change and possibility of the using of additional adapters for fixing of projection device on different lens types are provided. There is a set of additional semi-translucent mirrors for different conditions of the shooting. Besides, the projection device can be autonomous used as blinds. The LCD color monitor with diagonal 5.6" is provided by resolution ability not less than 400 TV lines and possibility of the autonomous power supply. Its weight does not exceed 600 g. The monitor is provided by easy fixing and adjustment, as well by the mode of the mirror overturn of the scene. It is possible to use the monitor as independent device (if it is functioned without prompter).
For monitor fixing a portable easy removable adjustable holder, made of aluminum is used. It is sectional, adjustable in three planes and is fixed on television camera or on mounting platform. The bore weight is not less than 2 kg. Autonomous device M-1 for scrolling of the text has a small size and weight, a convenient ergonomic design (similar to computer mouse) and at location on announcer table does not grab any attention of the spectator. For functioning of M-1 neither any special software, nor computer and neither operator teleprompter, nor special computer skill are not required. Instead of that there is a simple and operative loading of the text. Time of the continuous reading is 2…4 minutes depending on size of the letters of the text.
This device can be used without announcer table (in the announcer hand). The text for scrolling prepares on usual (not specialized) computer with printer. The device M-1 can be used with all existing models of the teleprompter by domestic or foreign production. Its design should be considered in detail.
M-1 is an autonomous device inside a cabinet of the computer mouse. The principle of its functioning is based on reading of the text, printed on the paper strip with the help of miniature camera, placed inside a cabinet of the mouse. Entering the text in device is realized by means of leading-in the paper tape with printed text. The text with necessary formatting prepares on computer and is printed at printer on white paper of the usual format whereupon the sheet on marked line is cut on tapes of the required width. The text is formatted in the manner of 11 columns, divided by vertical lines. Before beginning of the functioning the M-1 device it is necessary to connect by the connector, fixed on the cord end, with peripherals (the monitor, battery or network adapter). At reading the text movement is realized by means of rotation of mouse wheel onward or back. The tape with text will also move proportionally to wheel movement, and accordingly, the text, displayed on screen of the monitor, will move upwards or downwards. The M-1 device is provided by simple design, and, as effect, by high reliability. Except the using of teleprompter on direct purpose, it can be used as independent device as the source of information for presentation and conference (for presentation of graphs, drawings, pictographs, schemes and etc.). Teleprompter ART-5 can be used with all any TV and cinema lens with diameter of external mounting ring 85 mm, including the most often applicable models of the Canon and Fujinon lens. For early produced lens models or lens with the other mounting dimensions in the kit can be additionally delivered the special adapters for external mounting rings by diameter 52 mm (Sony VX-1000 and similar), 58 mm (Canon GL-1, Sony PD-150 and similar), 62 mm (JVC GY-DV500U and similar), 72 mm (for Canon XL-1 and similar) and 86 mm. In teleprompter of ART-5 model the original concave mirror is used (the Russian patent 21442676 from 09.06.1998). Because of this mirror and with fixed size of the monitor 5.6" the size of the text reflected in mirror is beside 8". When the distance from camera to announcer increase, size of the letters of the text does not change, so announcers, residing on different distances from teleprompter (from the camera), will see the text equally well (because of concave mirror the size of the letters, visible by announcer, will be increased proportional to the distance). In this model the Influence of stray glares on mirror of the prompter is reduced, which are created by light sources in studio (particularly lateral and counter lights). This is connected with reduction of the viewing angle of the concave mirror in announcer direction (in comparison with flat mirror). The main regulations of teleprompter are following:
The choice of the camera fixing height is defined by position of the announcer in front of TV camera and the basic creative idea of the stage manager. The design of teleprompter allows shooting the announcer both from lower or from upper foreshortening. At adjustment of factor of system magnification it is necessary to take into account that it can change within limits, defined either by the distance between monitor and mirror, or by the distance between mirror and announcer.
