Equipment for MPEG coding and decoding from Scopus Network Technologies company

Review contents:

The tempestuous development of digital broadcasting technology presents the hard requirements to producers of corresponding equipment. The Scopus Network Technologies Company is one of the leaders in the field of development and production of the digital broadcasting equipment in MPEG-2 DVB format. The company place high emphasis on such aspects, as quality, reliability and strict correspondence to international standard. Presenting very high requirements to itself and considering customer interests the Scopus company today presents a broad spectrum of the equipment for compression, processing, video and audio receiving-decoding in MPEG-2 DVB standard. Besides there are MPEG-2 DVB coders of CODICO series — from base stationary models up to devices of the mobile using (DSNG/DENG).

Coder is the most responsible element in any digital broadcasting system, because only it exactly defines the quality of the picture and “obtrudes” rate, so signifying the total resource to transport network. Exactly so Scopus Network Technologies place high emphasis on the development of optimum algorithm for compression with working as with constant (CBR), so and with variable (VBR) bitrate. So coders of CODICO series can work with output rates about 2 Mbit/s under 720×576 resolution in CBR mode and in standard satellite transponder “pack” up to 19 TV programs when use the systems of the statistical multiplexing (the VBR mode).

The distinctive features of all CODICO coders:

  • Best compatibility with receivers- decoders (either professional or on subscription) by other producers;
  • Strict correspondence to all international standards;
  • High quality compression;
  • Reliability;
  • Variety of basic configurations and additional options.

Today CODICO series comprises seven base models: five models are professional stationary coders (E-90/-900/-900A/-1000/-1100) and two models are professional coders for mobile and portable stations (E-1510 and E-1710).

CODICO E-90

E-90 is the basic coder designed for use when specific additional features are not required. E-90 coder well suits for using in such broadcasting system as professional regional distributing networks, cable studios, private networks etc. That is to say in areas where number of the programs is low. The good factors on price/quality parameter of this equipment allow providing the broadcasting services for the lowest cost.

CODICO E-900

E-900 is the coder, created for use in private networks, business applications, where are not such high requirements to processing video, as in professional networks. Some restrictions are entered in the coder especially, allowed vastly to reduce the price and keep high quality and reliability. However the wide range of additional options does E-900 coder broadly applying in different networks: private, corporative, cable etc.

CODICO E-900A

E-900A is the professional audio MPEG-2 DVB coder. It provided by 4 audio stereo inputs and composes the audio content as independent radio services. The coder can be used either for radio networks construction or for working inside compression station for entering of separate radio programs.

CODICO E-1000

E-1000 is the professional MPEG-2 DVB coder. The high effective core and broad range of additional options will make this coder as universal matter for construction of different compression systems such as cable networks, professional distributing networks and inter-studio exchange equipment. Many additional options such as cascading, profile 4:2:2, statistical multiplexing and etc., are programme features allowing to readjust the coder without sending in service centre. For the most efficient use of transport resource in this device the latest technologies of the coding and multi-program statistical multiplexing (the profiles 4:2:2/4:2:0) are used.

The coder provided by a system of the video picture preprocessing. This kind of processing includes analogue-digital 10-bit transformation, filtering and synchronizing the frames and allows producing correction of analogue signal parameters: brightness and colorness levels, video level offset, change of the Y-C delay, control of noise suppression level.

E-1000 coder is adapted for low stream rates (LBR) with full resolution 720×576.

CODICO E-1100

E-1100 is professional MPEG-2 DVB coder, corresponding to the highest requirements of the video processing with best quality. For the most efficient use of transport resource in this coder the latest technologies of the coding and multi-program statistical multiplexing (the profiles 4:2:2/4:2:0) are used.

The coder is provided by extended system of the preprocessing of video pictures, which, besides possessing all possibilities of E-1000 coder, provided by extended temporary processing, as well by system of digital noise suppression.

E-1100 coder is adapted for low stream rates (LBR) with full resolution 720×576.

CODICO E-1510

E-1510 is professional high-quality coder for mobile apply (DSNG), forming MPEG-2 DVB stream. As a matter of fact the coder is a combination of coder (4:2:2/4:2:0), QPSK-modulator (70/140 MHz) and raising converter of the frequency (Ku-, L-range) and presents itself an ingenious decision for networks of the collection and sharing the material. E-1510 provided by the built-in possibility of the remote control (including SNMP-protocol), has a special mode for low delay, built-in DVB/BISS scrambler and strictly corresponds to the DVB-S and DVB-DSNG standards. Using of an internal multiplexor allows rejecting an external multiplexor for shaping of multi-program package inside mobile station with minimum expenses. The maximum rate of a stream will be formed reaches 18 Mbit/s.

E-1510 is constructed on the basis of E-1100 coder and has, accordingly, the same coding and interface features. When use the additional modules the stream rate can be increased up to 25 Mbit/s.

CODICO E-1710

E-1710 is professional high-quality mobile DSNG-coder with built-in DVB-modulator, and has a height 1U. E-1710 has a modification on the base of stationary E-900/-1000/-1100 coders and inherits all possibilities and features of these models. The coder can have the modulator such as QPSK, 8PSK, 16QAM, and COFDM. E-1710 is easy operated device, providing high compression quality with minimum power consumption that is very important for mobile and portable systems.

The features of the CODICO coders are given in table.

Receiver-decoder CODICO IRD-2600

The professional receivers- decoders CODICO IRD-2600 are intended for receiving and processing of video content (4:2:0 profile), audio programs and data in MPEG-2 DVB standard. The receivers can provided by different input and output interfaces allowing using them in miscellaneous situations that are from traditional satellite receiver up to converter interface.

The total scheme of the receiver is shown on the figure.

Conditionally it is possible to select the following elements:

  • Input;
  • Decoder;
  • Output.

The input element supports the interface of different types for receiving of digital signal from determined transport environment. The transport digital stream can enter on decoder or from input or, avoiding input element, directly on decoder itself through DVB-ASI or RS-422interfaces. Decoder executes demultiplexing and decoding of elementary video, audio, data, service data streams. The output element forms video- and audio signals, data streams and can have an interface of different types.

The QPSK receiver includes a tuner, QPSK-demodulator and FEC decoder. The device takes the signal in L-range, incoming from LNB. Tuner will convert this signal in two analogue signals (I and Q), which are digitated by double ADC. The digitated signals move on demodulator, corresponding to DVB-S specification completely. The automated control of the transmission ratio, the Nyquist filtering, synchrosignal extraction and adjustment of carrier are realized by digital processing methods. Demodulated signal moves on FEC for correction error. This part includes the Viterbi decoding, framing, decompaction of impulse signals and Reed-Solomon decoding. The coding rate, transformation of the spectrum and phase inexactnesses is automatically resolved by FEC-decoder. All described functions completely correspond to the DVB-S specification (ETS 300 421).

Chosen by QPSK receiver the digital transport stream enters on transport demultiplexer, which selects the necessary elementary streams from the total transport MPEG-2 stream. If in receiver modules of the conditional access are installed (on scheme are not shown), that transport demultiplexer realizes the de-scrambling of “closed” programs. Hereinafter streams are distributed depending on purpose: service data enter on central processor, video, audio and data enter on video decoder, than the SDI interface, audio decoder and interface of high speed data (up to 20 Mbit/s).

When the receiver is on, the central processor realizes the loading of software from nonvolatile memory. Hereinafter initialization of all elements is produced in accordance with parameters of the last adjustment, also keeping in nonvolatile memory. Possibility of device control is actuated after loading through controls on front panel or RS-232 port. In the same way, the processor forms the necessary synchronizing signals for generator of the synchronization, the stream of low rate data through interface RS-232, VBI data and control signals for all receiver elements.

The generator of synchronization is adjusted by the processor and realizes the co-ordination of the functioning of the SDI interface, two video coders, and OSD generator. The source of synchronization can be either an internal generator or an external source.

Video decoder executes the decompression of the digital video stream. The recalled videosignal enters on commutator, operated by synchrogenerator, realizing insertion of information from VBI processor. Completely formed videostream is entered on videocoders and SDI interface. Videocoder 1 forms the television analogue PAL signal, NTSC or SECAM signal (optionally Russian SECAM) through composite and S-Video interfaces. Videocoder 2 takes the signal through OSD generator, carrying in the whole stream the information, which necessary to display on screen for monitoring (videocoder 2 and OSD generator are installed optionally). The output amplifiers form the analogue signal of necessary level.

The consequent digital SDI interface is installed additionally. It takes videostream from videodecoder, digital audio stream from decoder, additional information from processor. Hereinafter all data are synchronized and given on SDI coder, forming output signal. The output amplifier realizes shaping of the signal of necessary capacity and amplitude.

Audio decoder takes the digital stream from demultiplexer. It realizes the decompression of the level I and II ISO MPEG-1 stream. The resulting stream moves on digital-analogue converter, implementing transformation of the signal from digital in analogue. The digital streams can be move to AES/EBU connectors.

With synchrosignals (up to 2 Mbit/s) low or high rate data stream is processed and formed in central processor. The high rate data stream (up to 20 Mbit/s) is formed by separate data and synchronizing generators. On these generators the streams enter from transport demultiplexer directly.
