Videocassette recorders of D-9 format of The JVC Company

Review contents:

The majority of videocassette recorders of D-9 format produced by The JVC Company were already described in review published two year ago (“625”, 2000, № 6, S. Gunko, S. Karpov, “Videocassette recorders of D-9 format”). In particular, there were described BR-D92, BR-D52, BR-D50, BR-D-51, BR-D80, BR-D85, BR-D350, BR-D750 devices and also on-camera BR-D40 videocassette recorder.

In this article the reader in going to get acquainted with characteristics of editing VCR BR-D860 and layer BR-D560.

Editing videocassette recorder BR-D860 with function of pre-read is created on the basic of decisions applied in VCR BR-D92, but different from it, has only two sound channels. It provides recording and reproduction of eight-bit video in representation 4:2:2 with bitrate of 50 Mbit/sec. compression level is 3.3:1, intraframe compression, on the base of discrete-cosine conversion. Signal/noise ratio is less than 55 dB. The sound is PCM 16-bit with frequency sampling of 48 kHz. The construction of device allows setting additional module of SDI input/output. Due to the function of pre-read there is an opportunity to realize special effects and editing in device (when there is second signal source). VCR allows performing editing in modes of assembly with b shot accuracy. However for that editing controller is needed. The speed search can be done by sound. The speed of search can be 32 times higher than nominal and when that color image can be provided on the screen. There is foreseen the mode of slow reproduction at speed of ±1/3 from nominal and control with the help of jog/shuttle wheel. At the time of full rewinding of tape is about 3 min. Except for digital VCR is equipped with analogous interfaces: composite and component by video, symmetrical sound output to the monitor. Besides there are D-sub interfaces for control of temporary distortions corrector, RS-422A for remote control, and also RS-232C for control and diagnostics.

The long service life of videotape is provided by the use of perfect tape transport, ceramic direction rollicks and sapphire flange.

Videocassette recorder consumes 140 W, has sizes of 429×189×567 mm and weight of less than 23 kg.

BR-D560 video player is assigned for work in set of linear projection booth as analogous signal source or as standard device for loading of material into the system of nonlinear editing.

The player allows reproducing the signal saved in D-9 format (octet video in 4:2:2 representation, bitrate of 50 Mbit/sec and two sound channels). Additionally it is possible to set SDI board. Sound section is equipped with regulator of sound level. The following is present: control by jog/shuttle wheel, sound accompaniment at speed search, slow reproduction at ±1/3 speed from nominal and other functions. Composite and component video outputs and symmetrical sound output provide the integration with analogous equipment. The regulation of temporary distortions corrector is done through D-sub interface. For remote control and diagnostics there are RS-422A/232C ports.

By sizes and weight BR-D560 doesn’t differ from BR-D860, and consumes 100 W.
