Sanyo Plasma Monitors
By Vladimir Nefedov, Valery Samohin

The Moscow company CTC Capital, operates on the market of projecting technics for more than seven years, is exclusive distributor of the Sanyo Electric Corporation, well-known by the achievements in the LCD technologies. The Sanyo Corporation produces the world-brightest LCD projectors PLC-XF45 (10000 ANSI-lm, of 1024 per 768 pixels).

The Sanyo Company had started to produce the plasma monitors not so ago and used the developed technologies, that have the good price/quality ratio, in particular, Plasma AI and ALiS (Alternate Lighting of Surface). The operation of the first of them (its improved version of Sanyo monitors is called Dynamic Plasma AI) is in the adaptive linearization of the image channel, providing the maximum amount of the reflected brightness gradations. That is especially noticeable when watching the plans with the dominating dark or lighten areas filmed with inadequate or excessive exposition. The AliS technology is the way of showing with alternation of illegible and strong lines of the lighten pixels, which allows the successful solution of tasks of increase in clearness and brightness of image when using the relatively inexpensive plasma panels without the separating gaps between the pixels lines. The subjective quality evaluation is better, then of the kinescope monitors due to the obscurity of the lines beating as the fields on the plasma are shown not on-line by the lines, but entirely at once according to the signal of shot memory.

Unfortunately at all attractiveness of plasma monitors the main disadvantages of most of them are:

  • removing of the color image palette, provoked by the differences of the specter characteristics of heat-resistant phosphors of the plasma cells surface from normal ones;
  • after images, staying on the plasma screen after the long show of the incomparable in format or stable images, for example, computer graphics;
  • high power consumption and corresponding ventilation noise of the active cooling systems.

When developing the plasma monitors, Sanyo engineers considered the listed disadvantages and undertook some actions for their weakening. So, here the choice from three values of the color temperature (Warm, Normal and Cold) is provided. An operation in the economy conditions ECO1 and ECO2 with lowered brightness is provided. That weakens the after image effect. For the protection against the after image the functions of automated shutting done of the power supply after the settled time (Timer off) and when there is no commands of the monitor control for some time (Power Save) and two functions of screen saver are provided. One of the, Picture rotation, allows setting the cyclical removing of the image in relation to the screen at 5, 10 or 20 pixels after each 15, 30 or 60 minutes. The other function, White pattern, lightens the whole screen white at any time or with period of 30, 60, 90 minutes for 10 or 15 minutes. The necessity of using these function when operating with 'life' images doesn't appear, if the Natural Wide function is used, Which widens the picture of 4:3 format horizontally without appearances of 'circumcisions' vertically so that the nonlinear distortion in the central area of the screen become unnoticeable for the viewers.

The Sanyo plasma monitors are equipped with the active cooling system with ventilators, which are turned off automatically at the rise of the temperature inside the display and change the intensivity of rotation depending on it. The information about the temperature, intact of ventilators and type of the reflected signal can be shown on the screen of the monitor. The Sanyo plasma panels can be set tightly to the free wall or in the niche with gaps of not less than 6 cm in the back and 10 cm from its top and side sides, i.e. they can operate in conditions with unpredictable local temperature.

Plasma monitors of the Sanyo Company on the Russian market are represented by the two models with the screen diagonal of 32 and 42 inches in H1E modifications with cutoff points for the connection of computer only and H1EV with the set of cutoff points for other sources of information.

The control of the monitors can be done from the remote control console as well as from the front frame of the display, the action of buttons can be blocked (Control Lock function). At the majority of the models the functions of the automated shutting down of the power supply in the settled time period or at the absence of commands of the monitor control and the economy condition with the lowered brightness (Power Save) can be activated. Interesting for the professional application are the opportunities of the cascade turning on of several monitors with the show of the same programs in the different places of big quarters or out of it with the use of transit AV lines (Loop Through Out) and wire control form the combined remote control console or via RS-232C channel from the computer.
