The JVC Plasma Displays
By Vladimir Vacik, Vladimir Vodzinsky

The plasma JVC displays actively presence on the markets of the Commonwealth of Independent States and Baltic for two years already. Two years...From the everyday point of view it is not so long, but from the technological progress' point of view it is whole epoch. During that time few generations of the plasma displays has changed. With each year, with each new generation the plasma displays become thinner, quieter, lighter and, what is the most important, chipper. And the image becomes bigger, clearer, brighter, more contrast and natural. The service life increases as well. The areas of application widen. If the first plasma panels were basically used as the informational displays in shops, airports, etc, when now the displacement into the private sector is occurring, where they take the place of one component of the home movie theater more and more firmly.

The advantage of such displays is the image absolutely has no twinkling as each element of the image lights constantly according to the controlling signal (but not when the flow of electrodes fall on it as in CRT) The plasma panels are insensitive to the electromagnetic fields. The plasma panels have the small depth. The brightness of the plasma panel is much higher than the CRT brightness. Plasma displays are absolutely flat what rejects the problems with the geometrical distortions. Due to the linear, matrix structure of the plasma panel screen and the not letting the ultraviolet though surface the geometrical distortions and harmful for the eyes emanation that are usual for the traditional kinescope monitors are absent on the screen. The plasma panels are advantageously different from them by the width and the comfort of the viewing (viewing angle is 160 ° ), more bright and contrast image. There is no brightness slump from the center to the sides of the screen, which is usual for the projection sets. Due to the small thickness the panel can be easily fixed on the wall, set to the special floor or desktop body or fix into the ceiling of the room with the help of the optional brackets. With the right use the resource of the plasma panels is much higher than at the kinescopes or projector lamps.

Today JVC Professional supplies the GD-V4210PZWA panels (while the issue was prepared the GD-V4210PZWA model was taken out of production) and GM-P420 and 50" GD-V500PZU with the size 42" cornerwise.

The JVC plasma panels have the hyperfine construction. So, 42" models have the thickness of only 89 mm, when 50" is 98 mm. That influences the weight of the panels and an opportunity of the very different variant of setting. The JVC Company offers for the 42" panels the wall fastening (two types), stand for the panels (simple and stand-transformer on the wheels) and even the ceiling fastening of two types.

The resolution of plasma panels is: 843 per 480 (at the 42" panels), 1366 per 768 (GD-V500PZU). The screen format is 16:9. At the pixel size of only 1 and 0.8 mm for 42" and 50" correspondingly what provides the clear real image without the visible raster.

GD-V4210PZWA provides the nominal brightness of 360 cd/m2 and 540 cd/m2 is maximum what is much higher than the CRT based monitors figure, which is not mentioned by the producers at most time and actually are only150-200 cd/m2. That allows using the panels in the heavily lighten indoors and even in case of direct sun precip. The well absorbing surface of the screens promotes that. The nominal brightness of GD-V500PZU is 300 cd/m2.

The plasma panels are characterized by the superhigh contrast. On practice for the comfort perception of the video information the necessary contrast cannot be lower 1000:1. And the contrast of the JVC plasma panels is:

  • for GD-V4210PZWA it is 1200:1,
  • for GM-P420 it is 1500:1,
  • for GD-V500PZU it is 3000:1.

The high contrast favors the good painting of the details in shadows, formation of pellucid, crystal clear image. If you are watching the movie from the quality (for example, good DVD-player or HD-videocassette recorder) on the JVC plasma panels, there appears a feeling of full sinking into the image.

Each color compound is coded with the discretization of not less then 8 bit what provides the receiving of more than 16,8 mln. of color tints. In the plasma panels of the JVC Company the opportunity of color temperature regulation is provided (Warm, Normal and Cold). Due to that the right color palette and get the high realistic of the picture can be given to the image on the screen. Due to the named advantages the plasma panels found the wide application in the quality information indicator boards and television studios.

Also at the long viewing of the static images on the plasma panels of16:9 format there can appear so-called after image. The after image appears, for example, on the sides of the screen at the outlet of the image of 4:3 format or at the long reflection of some regular structure (for example, from the computer). The point burn-through of the phosphor is possible as well on the bright areas.

Different from other producers JVC Professional pays special attention to that problem providing the unique opportunities for prevention and elimination of this unpleasantness to the customers. So in the series of the new models of JVC plasma panels the functions Pixel Shift, Color-Revers, Refresh and White Bar Scroll, which allows periodical removing of the image down relating to the screen's top, reflect the moving white field and destroy the after image, are provided. Beside the few functions of the 'stretch' of the image of 4:3 format to all screen are provided.

The new GM-P420PCE model operates absolutely quiet as it doesn't have the ventilator in the cooling system.

All of the JVC plasma panels are the multimedia facilities. They allow connecting of almost all video signals including HDTV and DTV, plus the computer signal.
