Trinity system
Sergey Sergeyev

Trinity, a well-known universal system for TV production, has recently changed its name to GlobeCaster. Having got new capabilities from new developers, the system offers to the video artists unique tools of tomorrow. This small article will illustrate some GlobeCaster's characteristics allowing its operating as linear edit controller.

Equipped with 16 RS-422 ports, GlobeCaster may control various VTRs, many of which are provided with quick switch function. VTRs may be usual tape, disk or video server's channels.

External devices are controlled by GPI triggers. Easy-to-use interface, based on drag&drop technology, and built-in audio and video mixer provide free selection of edit methods. The system supports assemble, video or audio insert, auto insert, three-points edit, A/B-Roll. For VTRs with variable tape speed the system provides range of speed change of -8...+8 (multiplicity with respect to normal playback speed). Various types of time code may be used. Each fragment may have preset and saved color correction parameters which, later on, are used by all fragments of one tape, if necessary. All fragments on edit line are automatically supplied with icon for quick access. Any fragment's frame may be set as icon. During the process of marking the source material selected fragments may be directed not only to edit line but also into special bins, storing also files of credits, transitions, effects, graphics. All source material may be easily sorted and selected by many parameters, including time code, duration, tape number, etc.

In linear edit it is often needed to make transition between fragments of one tape. During operating under traditional technology, one of the fragments would have to be recorded into other tape or still-frame would have to be "frozen" in external device (DVE or still-store). GlobeCaster, supporting tested by time decisions, enriches the controller's arsenal with new means. Using memory of a built-in warp engine module allows performing mixer- and "wipe"-transitions between fragments of one tape on live image. Memory of one warp engine board is enough for storing 6 s of video. Many GlobeCaster owners install 2 boards into the system, thus the duration of mixer's operation may reach 12 s when operating with one source. Marking of fragments and manipulation with memory are automatic in one-machine edit. After performing the join, memory contents are not lost: it is saved on hard disk of the controlling computer and is automatically loaded at the second correction of edit transition.

Capability of edit elements to "stick" to each other should be referred to facilities improving editing's quality and speed. Width of "sticking" is regulated within the range of 1...20 frames.

As many other controllers, GlobeCaster is capable of importing and exporting edit decision lists in CMX format.
