About easy and quick editing
Vladimir Vodzinskiy

As it is known, editing is the most laborious stage in video production. Scenario requires creativity. Shooting, light arrangement, and sound recording require certain experience. Besides, edit requires great man-hour. No wonder that viewer's future perception of the film is formed during these very moments.

Not without a reason non-linear edit stations are so popular now. In this case, the process becomes simpler, though it does not diminish in time severely. Moreover, video data streams in modern broadcasting equipment require more powerful processors and more disk space. The station may need several minutes to count edit transmission with effect performed by mixer in real time. Thus, professional D-9 video equipment operates with 50 Mb/s data stream. At that, certain number of people engaged in video production on account of some reasons are not going to turn to non-linear edit, though they use digital equipment in their studios. However, sometimes simple, therefore quick edit is needed. Of course, edit controllers will not replace computer mouse, but they will considerably simplify mechanical part of the procedure, allowing editors to concentrate on creativity.

Editing controller RM-G820E
First of all, main edit keys of "slave" and "master" VTRs are duplicated on the control panel, thus there is no necessity in pushing the keys of both devices in order to prevent frame loss. Edit controller will allow synchronous start-up of the two or even several "slave" and "master" devices by one touch. Besides, jog/shuttle wheels, necessary for exact scenes' beginning and ending search, are placed handy in horizontal plane. JVC RM-G820E edit controller, besides all standard operations, features important Pre-read function, which allows signal mixing using only two VTRs of D9 format. Controller also employs two displays corresponding to the VTRs, being used. This allows getting all necessary information about time-codes and editing process at one glance. RM-G820E controller has RS-422A standard interface for connecting with VTR and VCP which allows its employing with equipment of other manufacturers, having such interface.

Main Pre-read RM-G820E controller's characteristics:

  • power supply - 9 V current;
  • power consumption - 8 W;
  • weight - 4,8 kg;
  • dimension: 430 x 99 x 311 mm;
  • operating temperature range +5...+40 °C;
  • VTR's modes control: play, forward, back, stop, pause, shuttle/jog search, and cassette eject, record emulation, recording;
  • edit modes - direct joint and insert;
  • reference signals: EBU time code, CTL time code or CTL pulse.

Additionally, the controller allows performing forced pinch roller withdrawal from tone-roller, separate sound signals edit.

Edit time code accuracy in the mode of pinch roller withdrawal makes 0 frames. CTL time code accuracy in the mode of pinch roller withdrawal makes +/- 2 frames (depending on the type of VTR). The controller can store 99 edit events with possibility of remarking and rearrangements in the edit decision list.

RS-422A/9-pin interface is available for VTR connection. There are also 4 GPI outputs capable of binding to various synchronization signals. Set time of anticipatory startup makes 5, 7 or 10 s. The controller allows controlling two devices: "slave" and "master". RM-G820E functions include sound level control. The operating is lightened by a multi-purpose LC display with a tape counter, operating in TC/CTL 24-h display mode (up to 23 h 59 min 59 s 24 frames) or CTL 10-h display mode (9 h 59 min 59 s 24 frames), and also showing general program's time (max - 11 h 59 min 59 s 24 frames). The controller has the following accessories: network adapter, power cord, VC-G9050U unit, 9-pin cable of up to 5 m length for connecting to SA-K80U control unit, additional SA-K66U numeric control keypad, mounting devices set.

In case the studio does not require such device but uses JVC equipment, the simplified RMG-800U controller, solving all edit problems, will be the best choice. It employs the set of all necessary functions and is connectable to video equipment via JVC 12-pin bar, available in majority of VTRs of this trademark, of both analog S-VHS and digital DV format. In spite of its simplicity, this edit controller features most functions of the upper RM-G820E model. It also employs GPI ports for external equipment control. Being more compact and light the controller does not require power supply for it gets the power from the connected VTR via directing bar. Still we have to note that, if using the controller together with SR-S388E VTR of leaving S-VHS format, some functions become unavailable: time code editing, editing with second sound channel insert, manual selection of edit fragment, and also preview-edit. But, if using BR-DV600E VTRs of digital DV format, all above mentioned as well as main edit operations may be performed quickly and easily.

Thus, being central units of linear edit equipment, edit controllers allow these stations to compete with non-linear edit systems
